Ferguson: We Might Be Top Had Town and Wycombe Not Played Bolton's Youth Team
Wednesday, 30th Oct 2019 09:38

Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson says his side might have been top of League One had Town and Wycombe not “played against Bolton’s youth team”.

Posh are currently third, two points behind the Chairboys in second and the Blues who lead the table on goal difference having played one game fewer than both the teams behind them.

Bolton were forced to play sides largely made up of U23 and U18 players in the opening weeks of the season while their takeover was completed. During that period Town won 5-0 at the University of Bolton Stadium, Wycombe having beaten them 2-0 at Adams Park on the opening day.

The Trotters’ new owners having been installed, they signed nine senior players on deadline day with their form gradually improving since then. They won their first game of the campaign 2-0 at Bristol Rovers last week. Posh play Keith Hill's side for the first time at London Road in December.

“Twenty-eight points from 15 matches is a decent return and let’s not forget if Ipswich and Wycombe hadn’t both played against Bolton’s youth team we might well have been top of the table,” Ferguson told the Peterborough Telegraph.

“But you tend to be where you deserve to be after 15 games and I’m very happy with our position. I’m delighted with how the players have performed so far.”

Overall, Ferguson, whose team would have beaten the Blues at London Road but for a last-gasp Luke Chambers header making the score 2-2 in August, has been pleased with his side’s form.

“The good far outweighs the bad so far,” he reflected. “When we’ve taken the lead in games this season we’ve picked up 26 of 30 points which is a very good stat.

“One League One defeat in the last 13 matches is excellent form as is five wins and a draw from our last six home matches.

“We’ve only picked up points from losing positions against Ipswich and Coventry, but the fact we came from behind twice against Coventry last Saturday and the second time was so late in the game was very encouraging.

“There are definitely areas we can improve. We’ve let two or more goals in on seven occasions which has to stop, but overall it’s been a pleasing start to the season.”

Town and Peterborough meet again when Posh make their trip to Portman Road on Saturday 1st February.

I think what he's saying is, if his auntie had testicles, she'd have been his uncle!

Wycombe and us would still beat Bolton now you fool. Maybe he could get his team practicing defending and then they'd be top?

What a ridiculous comment. You can only play what's in front of you, we don't decide the fixture list.

And if Rotherham and Accrington Stanley hadn't scored we would be way ahead and if the sky was green and if the the sea was pink.
And if Peterbrough had got more points - what utter codswallop.

If a few more people had voted remain then we wouldn't have Brexit.

Thanks for the insight Darren

If Darren's dad wasn't who he was Darren would only get to manage teams on FIFA.

Peterborough might be top if they hadn't bottled the injury time corner that Chambers scored from at London Road.

.....and of Alex Fergusson wasnt his dad ...he would be more of a nobody than he is now

....I get it ..I don't think he is being like his dad and playing mind games ..,its just a matter of fact ....a larger goal difference due to the the fact we played a weaker team is a good enough shout,,,I dont read it as he is bemoaning it ....but cheap headlines always attract attention

Lol. What a statement.
We went to Bolton, knowing we could get an away win, and big score line. Did we take advantage. Yes.
After 2 recent defeats, we went to Southend, knowing they had many players missing. A chance of a comfortable away win. Did we take advantage. Yes.
The course of the season is dictated, by many situations.
It's how the situations are dealt with, that matters.
DF just concentrate on your situations presented.

And we wouldn't have finished bottom last season if Bolton had been properly punished for not fulfilling their fixtures (which STILL hasn't been considered by the disciplinary panel along with their skipping of the Doncaster match this season). We deserved the karma of playing them when we did just for that...

I think losing to Fleetwood, Oxford and Doncaster had more to do with it Darren.

If Ipswich had scored the 3 goals in the first 20 minutes at London road that their defending warranted we would be 2 points clear.
If our scouts had come back from Argentina with Messi instead of Civelli then.... - well Roy Keane would have sold Messi because he could not play with Leadbetter and Jason Scotland

If I had not spent the time reading Ferguson's insight then I would definitely have had better things to fill my time!

And we might be further ahead if we'd played as many games as Posh. What a pointless point to make.
