Sunderland reached the semi-finals of the Checkatrade Trophy with a 2-0 victory over Manchester City U21s on Tuesday.
Duncan Watmore put the hosts ahead in the 22nd minute with his first goal since April 2016.
Lynden Gooch added to the advantage after half-time and Sunderland held on to secure their place in the last four.
Portsmouth also advanced as David Wheeler's 85th-minute goal secured a 1-0 victory over Peterborough.
Bristol Rovers ran out 3-0 winners against 10-man Port Vale.
Ollie Clarke scored in the 16th minute before Tom Conlon was sent off after half-time for two bookings in quick succession.
Tom Nichols made it 2-0 from the penalty spot and Alex Rodman made sure of victory with the third goal.
Danny Mayor scored twice as Bury won 5-2 against Oxford United.
Dominic Telford, Adam Thompson and Byron Moore also netted for Bury while James Henry and Samir Carruthers replied for Oxford.
